Perhaps your group or special event is looking for a program that is both educational and entertaining at the same time. This program series captures the audience's attention through demonstrations and activities that have been audience-tested. All shows/workshops are taught by Jim Lenz, a 2005 Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction Award winner as selected by Partners in Education of Brown County. Teaching assistants are called upon when needed. Jim has performed for vacation resorts, fairs and festivals, schools, libraries, homes, assisted living facilities, and day cares. - Jim's air-powered rocket program has become increasingly popular. This unique opportunity is now available to you and your group. Attendees of the workshop design, construct, and launch their own rocket. The materials needed to make the rockets are minimal and inexpensive. The launching of the rockets is very safe since it is powered by a bicycle pump as opposed to a rocket engine. Attendees get to keep their rocket and leave the workshop with a stronger understanding and appreciation of rocket science and aerodynamics. Fossil Adventure (time varies depending on size of group)
Introduce the Earth's history in a thrilling fashion with authentic fossil replicas your group can actually take home! Jim Lenz's Fossil Adventure workshop is unparalleled to any other program in the country! Jim himself has discovered hundreds of fossils of fish, plants, insects, and copperlite (fossilized poop! Believe it or not). He has harvested fossils at mountain peaks up to 10,500 feet above sea level in the state of Colorado. He also has gathered fossils in the states of Utah, Wyoming, and South Dakato. One extremely rare fossil he discovered eventually made it to the Smithonian Institute. Participants of this program learn about fossil formation, how they are often unearthed, and view real fossils gathered from his trips out West. But, best of all, particpants can cast their own fossil replicas. Replicas made from molds from real fossils. Some examples include Tyrannosaurus Rex Tooth, shark tooth, trilobite, cave beartooth, and raptor claw.
The Science of Flight (45 minutes)
- Attendees of this program will be entertained and educated about the science of flight through demonstrations and other visuals. Audience participation takes place all throughout the program. One demostration (learning moment) builds upon the next demonstration (learning moment). Participants of the program will have a better appreciation for how and why airplanes, helicopters, rockets, boomerangs, and even frisbees fly in the air.
The Science of Ice Cream (35 min - 60 min)
Participants of this program will love learning about the amazing science behind making homemade ice cream. Of course participants get to eat the ice cream after they make it.
The Science of Magic: Into the Mind of a Magician (35 minutes)
• Magic captures the imagination of many people. What really goes on behind the illusions? Whether we are talking about the world's most famous illusions in Las Vegas or close-up miracles that go on in our hand, why is the magician able to fool us? We will take a look into the mind of a magician. Experience the science and psychology of magic. Those who attend become active participants. Prepare to laugh, to learn, and to be amazed as you experience the science of magic.
The Magic of Reading Show (45 minutes)
• Designed for libraries and schools, the "THE MAGIC OF READING SHOW" is a delightful magic show all about reading. James uses fun magic age- appropriate comedy, and hilarious audience participation to show how books can magically let us travel anywhere meet famous people and learn how to do just about anything! THE MAGIC OF READING SHOW is a wonderful way to increase student awareness and interest in your upcoming Reading Program or Book Fair or Library Resources. It's great as a kick-off, it's also a fun way to reward students for achieving their reading Program goals. This program entertainingly demonstrates that through reading a wide variety of books, we can travel through time and space by unlocking the power of our imaginations. With the creative use of magical routines and illusions, the audience is encouraged to turn toward reading books as the best route to having a successful and rewarding life. This program is a fast-paced, 45-minute presentation of controlled excitement, magic, and audience participation. This is NOT your typical school assembly show and definitely not a show out of a suitcase! It also offers a series of baffling magic feats, mixed with lots of comedy and some zany animals like raccoons and skunks. But along with fun will be the important theme which emphasizes the great pleasure and value of reading. The show provides students with a live exposure to the performing arts, offers a motivational theme, and lets them enjoy themselves at the same time. The goals of “The Magic of Reading Show” are to:
